When it comes to hard baits, there aren’t many that get fished more than gill styles in my arsenal. I’ve never been the biggest fan of 3 piece baits. I fish two piece baits religiously because I like the natural swim as opposed to the snakey style of the added joints and it always seemed like they produced a lot more for me. The swimbait industry grows daily and there are constantly new baits being introduced. UFO is a brand that I had my eye on for awhile. The three piece Gill wake was catching a lot of fish across the nation and even though it went against my two piece mentality I had to see what the hype was all about. I Had the pleasure of meeting the man behind the brand at Toxic Day 2 and was able to snag one for myself. The UFO Gill is 6 inches long and weighs in at 2.5 ounces. The bait is pretty thin and the overall shape is different than others on the market. It didn’t take very long for this bait to impress me. There are so many different ways to fish it. It is super stable and you can wake it at any speed without it blowing out. With small twitches of the handle, the bait will almost swim in place with the head barely moving while the back section continues to swim. The technique that I like the most is the do nothing. You literally can pitch this bait into a pocket and watch it swim in place with only the ripples of the surface. It has already paid dividends for me fishing it that way in shade pockets during these hot summer afternoons. The only change I made to the bait from stock is that I changed out the hooks to Owner ST-36’s. It comes with the cutting points and I’ve had nothing but bad luck with those hooks. It’s personal preference more than anything but it gives me confidence. The reality of this bait is that it isn’t just hype. It flat out gets chewed. The price tag of $115 won’t set you too far back either if you’re already use to throwing swimbaits and know how expensive it can be. Don’t hesitate to grab one the next time they’re available. You won’t be disappointed.
