When it comes to swimbaits, it seems like we are all constantly trying to find ways to make them better or add any sort of customization that will give us even the slightest advantage. With soft baits, it's hard to think of any customization done more than rigging modifications. One popular modification is the removal of the stock jig hook to add a treble hook on the top of the bait instead. We know this mod as the widely popular Butch Brown rig, named after the highly successful trophy hunter himself. This mod is often done to the Huddleston Deluxe Trout soft baits for better hook up ratio but probably the most widely done modification is adding a stinger hook. This involves adding an additional hook farther back towards the tail section of the bait. The stinger hook is added to increase the probability of a hook up just incase the fish only eats the back end of the bait and also to have another hook in the fish. There are tons of different ways and variations to add a stinger hook. You could use braid, single strand wire, and 5 strand wire. For the hooks themselves, you can use trebles or quad hooks in variety of different sizes. The combinations are endless. In this video, I talk about what method and which materials I prefer to use when rigging stinger hooks.
