The 3:16 Lures Rising Son was created by Mickey Ellis and has produced results across the world. He’s been making the Rising Son for quite some time but earlier in the year he introduced the 5 Inch version to the line-up. The bait is offered in over thirty-five different colors and is sold in weedless and line thru options. With these options, you can fish the bait in virtually any situation.
It has a very life like swimming action and is very easy to rig. This bait was designed to be paired with the Owner 8/0 Beast Hook. You can also fish it on the Owner Flashy Swimmer or any other brand that you prefer. There is a pilot hole in the nose of the bait along with the under belly where you insert the twist lock and point of the hook. This makes it very easy to keep the bait straight while you rig it.
The Rising Son is a bait designed for not only the experienced swimbait fisherman but those who are trying to test the waters of big baits as well. What is nice about this bait, is that you don’t have to break the bank on a setup to fish it. It does not require a high-priced swimbait rod or reel. Mickey recommends a 7’6 heavy fast action rod and 15 Lbs. fluorocarbon.
I spent a good while tinkering with different set ups and landed on the one pictured above. The rod I chose is a Spiralite Custom Rods Maverick 7’6HF. It has a little bit of tip with a stout backbone to drive that hook home. I use the Shimano Calcutta D 200 in a 5.7:1 gear ratio. I have had success on faster gear ratios but fishing this bait slower keeps you in the strike zone a lot longer. 15 Lbs. P-Line Tactical Fluorocarbon is my preferred line choice. It has been excellent for me and very easy to feel even the slightest tick. This line is very strong and can handle those tough fights even in close combat.
The Rising Son has been available in 6.75 In. and 8 In. for a while and they are excellent options as well. I choose to fish the 5 In. more than any of the other sizes because it closely matches the length of the forage in most areas that I fish. I throw it the same way I would if I were throwing a Spinnerbait or Bladed Jig. It is very important to focus on isolated weed patches, overhead cover, flats, sparse tules, and current breaks. Creeping the bait past the roots of vegetation can be very key to enticing those hard to trigger bites.
I have fished a lot of different swimbaits and they all seem to have something in common. You catch a few fish and the bait is thrashed and ends up in a pile at the bottom of the boat. The Rising Son doesn’t seem to have that issue. It is very durable and even after a few fish can be repaired back to working condition with a few dabs of Mend-it. The Bait in the picture is still in service and has caught well over 20+ fish.
There is a colorway for every scenario and the price tag won’t force you to eat Top Ramen till your next payday. You can purchase them in two packs for $12.99 through the Company’s site 316lurecompany.com or thehookuptackle.com
